Course Overview

This approximately 30 km drive starts from Muju, famous for its fireflies, climbs to Jeoksangsan Mountain's wild grape wine cave, and ends at Jeoksangho Lake. Muju Bandiland offers firefly ecology programs, while the wine cave, built in an abandoned mine at 600 m elevation, offers tastings of local wild grape wine.

Jeoksangho, an artificial lake near the summit, reflects the surrounding autumn foliage in spectacular fashion.

Section Highlights

Section 1: Muju Town to Bandiland (approx. 8 km)

Visit the insect museum and firefly experience center. Live firefly observation programs run on summer evenings.

Section 2: Bandiland to Wine Cave (approx. 12 km)

The mountain road climbs to the wine cave maintained at 10-15 degrees Celsius year-round for wine aging and tasting.

Section 3: Wine Cave to Jeoksangho (approx. 10 km)

Past the fortress ruins to the mountain lake, where an observation deck offers views across the Muju region.

Driving Tips

  • Firefly observation available June-August after 8 PM
  • Jeoksangsan road has many curves on a two-lane mountain road
  • Wine cave admission: 3,000 KRW (includes wine tasting)
