Course Overview
Maltijae Pass on the road from Boeun to Songnisan features gentle curves and moderate grades in a pleasant winding course. Passing the 600-year-old Jeongipmsonng pine tree (Natural Monument) before reaching Songnisan's Beopjusa Temple, this mountain road is Chungbuk's signature driving route.
This 30 km drive goes from Boeun town through Jeongipmsonng and Maltijae to Beopjusa Temple, especially popular during autumn foliage season.
Section Highlights
Section 1: Boeun Town to Jeongipmsonng (approx. 8 km)
Heading toward Songnisan and pausing at the 600-year-old Natural Monument pine tree.
Section 2: Jeongipmsonng to Maltijae (approx. 10 km)
The core winding section with gentle continuous curves, enjoyable even for novice drivers.
Section 3: Maltijae to Beopjusa (approx. 12 km)
Descending into Songnisan to reach the millennium-old Beopjusa Temple founded during King Jinheung of Silla.
Driving Tips
- Peak autumn foliage is mid-October to early November
- Jeongipmsonng is right by the roadside for easy viewing
- Beopjusa's Palsangjeon (National Treasure) is a must-see
- Boeun's jujubes and pine mushrooms are local specialties
