Course Overview

Mungyeong Saejae was the most important mountain pass on the Yeongnam Road connecting Seoul and the Yeongnam region during the Joseon Dynasty. Three restored gates (Juhulgwan, Jogoggwan, and Joryeonggwan) mark the route. The surrounding roads are now a beloved winding drive combining nature and history.

This 28 km drive goes from Mungyeong city through Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park over Ihwaryeong Pass (548 m) toward Chungbuk Goesan.

Section Highlights

Section 1: Mungyeong City to Provincial Park (approx. 8 km)

Passing Mungyeong's pottery village and omija farms along the roadside.

Section 2: Provincial Park to Ihwaryeong (approx. 12 km)

Passing three historic gates evoking the Joseon Yeongnam Road atmosphere, with continuous winding up to Ihwaryeong summit.

Section 3: Ihwaryeong to Goesan (approx. 8 km)

Crossing into Chungbuk with a change in mountain scenery to peaceful inland landscapes.

Driving Tips

  • Walking tour of Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park (1-2 hours) is highly recommended
  • Local specialties include omija wine and Mungyeong Saejae apples
  • Autumn foliage peaks mid-October to early November
  • Can be combined with Mungyeong Rail Bike
