Course Overview

Cheorwon is a unique place where the Hantan River's columnar joints meet the DMZ. The Hantan River was certified as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2020, featuring spectacular basalt columnar joints.

This approximately 40 km course runs from Cheorwon-eup through the Hantan River Columnar Joint Trail, Jiktang Waterfall, and Goseokjeong to the crane sanctuary in the Cheorwon Plain.

Section Highlights

Section 1: Cheorwon-eup to Jiktang Waterfall (approx. 12 km)

Move east along the Hantan River. Jiktang Waterfall is formed by the river flowing over basalt rock.

Section 2: Jiktang Waterfall to Goseokjeong (approx. 12 km)

Goseokjeong is a pavilion built on unique rocks in the Hantan River gorge, said to have been visited by King Jinpyeong of Silla.

Section 3: Goseokjeong to Cheorwon Plain Crane Habitat (approx. 16 km)

Drive across the vast Cheorwon Plain. Observe cranes, white-naped cranes, and eagles from autumn to winter.

Driving Tips

  • Hantan River Columnar Joint Trail walk takes about 1 hour
  • Crane watching season: November to February (Cheorwon Crane Observatory)
  • Cheorwon Odae rice and tofu are famous local foods
  • DMZ security tours require separate reservation (Cheorwon County Office)
