Course Overview
Gangwon Nature Road Course 4, the 'Winding Drive,' covers 160 km from Pyeongchang IC to Jeongseon. Starting from Wonju, passing through Hoengseong and Yeongwol, this emotional road is alive with curves and natural flow.
Begin at Wonju's Ganhyeon Tourist Area with its suspension bridge between cliffs, cruise past the tranquil surface of Hoengseong Lake, discover art at Yeongwol's Young Moon Y-Park, and find awe at the vertical cliff of Seondol overlooking the deep river.
Section Highlights
Section 1: Wonju Ganhyeon to Hoengseong Samhyeongje Rocks (approx. 40 km)
Start from the suspension bridge offering panoramic views of Sogeum River and Ganhyeonsan. The Three Brothers Rocks in Hoengseong are an impressive formation.
Section 2: Hoengseong Lake to Hoengseong Luge (approx. 40 km)
Drive alongside the calm Hoengseong Lake for a lakeside experience. The Hoengseong Luge provides thrilling activity options.
Section 3: Yeongwol Y-Park to Seondol (approx. 40 km)
Visit the 'Young Moon Y-Park,' a cultural arts complex in a renovated brewery, then witness the journey's highlight at Seondol, a dramatic vertical cliff rising above the deep river.
Section 4: Yeongwol Jangneung to Jeongseon (approx. 40 km)
Visit Jangneung Royal Tomb and Danjong History Museum, honoring the exiled and rehabilitated 6th Joseon king.
Driving Tips
- Allow at least 4 hours; 2 nights 3 days recommended with sightseeing
- Hoengseong hanwoo beef is the local specialty; try visiting during the autumn Hanwoo Festival
- Combine with Yeongwol Donggang rafting (summer)
- Jeongseon Arirang Market holds a traditional 5-day market (days ending in 2 and 7)
