Course Overview
This drive from Hamyang to Geochang in Gyeongnam offers both pastoral countryside views and mountain winding along the Jirisan foothills. Starting from Hamyang, climb through the S-curves of Jianjae Pass and arrive at Geochang's Suseungdae Valley for a perfect half-day itinerary.
Jianjae Pass, part of Provincial Road 1023, features dramatic S-curves climbing to 770m elevation and was selected as one of 'Korea's 100 Most Beautiful Roads.' Hamyang's Sanglim Park is Korea's oldest artificial forest, planted by Choe Chiwon during the Silla Dynasty over 1,100 years ago.
Section Highlights
Section 1: Hamyang Sanglim Park to Jianjae (approx. 15 km)
Start from the thousand-year-old Sanglim Park and head to Jianjae. The Jianjae Observatory offers panoramic views of the winding S-curve road and Jirisan ridgeline. Free admission.
Section 2: Jianjae to Hwarimdong Valley (approx. 20 km)
Cross Jianjae Pass and drive along Hwarimdong Valley. Enjoy pastoral scenery as the road follows the riverside through farming villages.
Section 3: Hwarimdong Valley to Geochang Suseungdae (approx. 20 km)
Enter Geochang County and arrive at Suseungdae, a scenic site where clear waters of Wicheon Valley meet rock formations and traditional pavilions.
Driving Tips
- Maintain speeds below 30 km/h on the continuous S-curves at Jianjae
- Sanglim Park is beautiful year-round but autumn foliage is spectacular
- Suseungdae is also popular for summer water activities
- Local specialties include Hamyang hanwoo beef and mountain vegetable meals
