Course Overview

The Jirisan Nogodan Snow Drive is the most dramatic winter drive in southern Korea. The road from Gurye to Seongsamjae (1,102m) becomes covered in snow tunnels and rime ice, evoking Nordic winter landscapes.

From Seongsamjae, it's a 3.5 km walk to Nogodan peak (1,507m), but the snow scenery from the parking lot alone is deeply moving. Jirisan's winter is harsh, but the rewards are equally grand.

Section Highlights

Section 1: Gurye-eup to Hwaeomsa (approx. 10 km)

From Gurye to Hwaeomsa Temple through winter valley scenery.

Section 2: Hwaeomsa to Seongsamjae (approx. 12 km)

Steep winding road with deepening snow as elevation increases.

Section 3: Seongsamjae to Piagol Junction (approx. 8 km)

Descend toward Piagol for equally stunning winter snowscapes.

Driving Tips

  • Check Seongsamjae road closure status in advance (closed during heavy snow)
  • 4WD + snow chains strongly recommended; many sections impassable for 2WD
  • Try sansuyu (cornus) tea at Gurye Sansuyu Village
  • 90-minute walk from Seongsamjae parking to Nogodan peak
