Course Overview

The Taebaeksan Snow Mountain Drive is a winter specialty in Taebaek, Gangwon's southernmost city. Taebaeksan (1,567m) features stunning snow flowers on its summit yew tree groves in winter. During the Snow Festival, enjoy snow sculptures, sledding, and igloo experiences.

Starting from downtown Taebaek to Danggol Plaza in Taebaeksan National Park, enjoy a light snow hike before returning. The clean winter air and pristine snowscapes of Korea's rooftop city represent the essence of winter driving.

Section Highlights

Section 1: Downtown Taebaek to Park Entrance (approx. 8 km)

From Taebaek Station past Hwangji Pond (Nakdong River's source, which never freezes in winter).

Section 2: Entrance to Danggol Plaza (approx. 10 km)

Snow-laden pine forests form tunnels along both sides of the road through the national park.

Section 3: Danggol Plaza to Yuilsa Temple (approx. 7 km)

Drive toward the temple surrounded by serene winter snowscapes.

Driving Tips

  • Taebaeksan Snow Festival: late January to early February at Danggol Plaza
  • Extremely cold wind chill at high elevation; full winter gear essential
  • Taebaek Hanwoo beef and samgyeopsal are local specialties
  • Snow chains mandatory; 30 km/h speed limit in the national park
